Long Range Wireless Technology

Some models of notebooks Dell D620 have springloaded switch which has positions. Off On > Search. From the On position, the springloaded button searches when it is activated. If boot my computer with my wireless enabled, it automatically connects to my preferred network. If this functionality is not built into my hardware, is there keyboard shortcut, or can set one?. am looking for method to initiate the search quicker, such as key combination.

If turn my wireless off using the button on the side of the notebook, then come back later and turn it back on, it does not reconnect for seconds or until choose to view available wireless networks and refresh the network list.
